The Newport News Police Department has arrested a man in connection with a rape that happened in the Oyster Point area of the city in early October. Newport News Communications received the call on October 6 at approximately 5:26 a.m. from an woman who told police a stranger sexually assaulted her. The suspect was armed with a black and silver handgun and also took items from the victim’s home. The suspect then ran out of a home in an unknown direction after the sexual assault and robbery.
An apartment undergoing renovation work caught fire early Friday morning in Norfolk. Officials with Norfolk Fire-Rescue say units were called to a four-family apartment building on Redford Street just after 3 a.m.

Police are searching for a shooting suspect in Newport News Thursday night. Officials say the shooting occurred at the 13300 block of De Wald Circle around 8:20 p.m. Once on the scene, police found a 25-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to his left leg. He is expected to be okay, and was transported to a local hospital.
State police have issued a senior alert for a missing 75-year-old woman. The Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office is looking for Barbara Yingling Taylor. Taylor is believed to be in danger and was last seen on January 24 at her home on 14906 Taylor Lane in Spotsylvania County, Virginia.

Hampton Police are investigating a shooting that happened Wednesday night in the 5100 block of Goldsboro Drive. Police say around 10:30 p.m., dispatchers received a call in reference to a shooting. When officers arrived, they found a 26-year-old man inside a home suffering from gunshot wounds.

Norfolk Fire Rescue responded to a commercial structure fire in the 800 block of Norview Avenue early Wednesday morning. Fire units arrived on scene at 2:51 a.m. with smoke showing from Smith and Williams Funeral Home.

Residents were in disbelief after Fairfax police said about six males in their late teens to early 20s attacked a man next to an apartment building in the Avant Apartments complex just before 3:00 Sunday afternoon. “They were able to apprehend two of the five to six suspects. Fairfax County police made a grisly discovery on Saturday: a partially decomposed human foot. A Springfield resident called officers to their home on the 5900 block of Brunswick Drive, where the remains were found in their backyard.
